The Masthead: Publishing Ethics, Legal Transparency, and the Lifeline of Contact
When you open a magazine, the first image your eye looks for after the cover is the 'Masthead' (Imprint) page. Imprint is a magazine's identity document, title deed and reputation before the public. It is announced here who is behind that journal, who bears the intellectual and legal responsibility, and with which international code it will be scanned in libraries. A publication with an incomplete or non-serious byline is treated as a pirated newsletter by the reader and the industry. In this lesson, we will learn the anatomy and legal obligations of a perfect imprint.
What You Will Learn in This Lesson
- To completely list the legal elements that must be included in the magazine's imprint within the scope of the Press Law.
- Learning the process of obtaining an ISSN (International Standard Periodical Number) and positioning it correctly in the imprint
- To understand the legal limits of the Concessionaire, Managing Editor, Editors and Printing House information.
Information Required by Law to be Included in the Imprint
In accordance with the Turkish Press Law No. 5187, it is mandatory for every periodical to have an imprint. In the imprint; The Concessionaire (the individual or company that owns the publication), the Responsible Editor-in-Chief, the Publication Type (Widespread, Regional, Local), the Place of Management (Open notification address) and the title and address of the Printing House should be clearly written.
Missing even one of this information may lead to administrative fines and suspension of legal distribution of the publication.
ISSN Number: Gateway to the World's Libraries
ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is the 8-digit international standard identification number given for periodicals. It is taken from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism National Library ISSN Türkiye Center.
A journal without an ISSN number is not considered academic, cannot be entered into library databases and is not accepted by official distribution companies. ISSN must be obtained separately for print and digital versions.
Editorial Staff and Compilation Liability
In addition to legal information, the imprint is the honor page of the invisible heroes who contributed to that magazine: The names of the Editor-in-Chief, Editors, Proofreader, Art Director, Photography Editor and Advisory Board are included here.
In addition, in accordance with the Compilation Law No. 6279, a certain number of compulsory copies of printed journals must be delivered to the Press Prosecutor's Office, the National Library and 5 designated compilation libraries as of the date of publication.
Why Are Communication Channels in the Imprint Vital?
If a magazine does not have an open email, postal address or corporate communication channel in its imprint, that magazine turns into a deserted island with its windows closed to the outside world. When new writers, talented young writers and illustrators want to submit work to the magazine, the first thing they look at is the imprint.
Reader letters, reviews, correction requests and copyright permissions flow through this official channel. A journal without a contact address loses its institutional trust in the eyes of its readers and becomes isolated by drying up its own flow of work.
